[01:00] It's Important To Prioritize Your Sleep So You Can Win The Day During sleep, your body and your mind will repair. Also, during sleep, your body will store hormones and burn fat. Sleep will let you make better decisions for the next day. When you're sleep-deprived, your ability to make good decisions goes out the window. REM sleep is recharging your brain, and it allows us to make good decisions. When the prefrontal cortex is energized and refreshed, we can make great choices throughout the day. [05:10] Mental Health: What Role Does Sleep Play? If you have ever been chronically sleep-deprived, you know how mentally terrible you feel. When we are not taking care of our mental health, it leads us back to making poor decisions. A lack of sleep can make us irritable, angry, frustrated, and even lead to road rage. Also, with a lack of sleep, your reaction time gets decreased. [11:20] What Is REM Sleep and How Much Do I Need? There are so many factors that go into how much REM sleep you need. 20% – 25% of your sleep should be deep, and the same goes for REM. Sleep is dynamic. You need to figure out how much REM sleep is optimal for you. If you wake up and you feel refreshed, mentally and physically, that's a good sign that you're getting enough REM sleep. [15:00] Why Do We Sleep, Anyway? It’s Great For Your Physical Body! Sleep helps with physical restoration. Growth hormones are released throughout the night. Sleep deprivation will actually impact the man’s testicle size. When you're not getting enough sleep, that throws off your insulin which leads to food cravings and food addiction. [18:30] You’re Not Getting Quality Sleep. That’s A Problem For Your Cortisol. Cortisol naturally should be highest in the morning. When you’re not getting enough sleep, your cortisol levels will stay high. If you’re not getting quality sleep, hormones are dysregulated. Then, your blood sugar will go all over the place. So, you crave sugar! When glucose goes up, ketones go down. [21:20] Caffeine’s Surprising Connection To Sleep Problems Caffeine blocks the adenosine receptors. The more caffeine you drink, the less you are letting your body rest. Caffeine gets in the way of getting quality sleep. When you’re not getting quality sleep, you’re in sleep debt. Plus, caffeine will dysregulate your circadian rhythm. People metabolize caffeine at different rates in different ways. [27:45] Sleep Tips: Create A Bedtime Buffer Between Day and Night Having a buffer of time between your day and your night is very important. The most important transition of the day is the transition from your actual day to the night. When you have a buffer, then you won’t bring your stress to bed. Taking a walk is a great buffer. You can also do a hobby as a buffer like playing music, learning something, or reading. [34:00] Why Eating Before Bedtime Is Actually A Bad Idea Your body doesn’t want food right before bed. You shouldn’t eat three to four hours before bedtime. However, it also depends on how fast you metabolize. Eating late will absolutely affect your sleep. Make sure to go to sleep in a fasted state. It’s challenging for busy people. However, it’s something that you can work on every day. [36:00] How To Optimize REM Sleep and Deep Sleep Incline sleeping can improve deep sleep. Sleeping on a 5 to 7-degree incline has been found to increase glymphatic drainage. It's not so much what you do. It's what you don't do. For instance, don’t eat! Also, don’t take vitamin D before bed. Sleeping in a cold room is great for deep sleep. AND MUCH MORE! She ate low-fat, whole grains, and no eggs. Her weight was healthy. Yet, her cholesterol was over 300. The doctor prescribed Amanda statins at the age of 32. Instead, Amanda wanted to try and fix the problem on her own. After six months, she got her numbers under 200. [07:35] The Number One Reason Why Dieters Fail The number one reason why people fail is the all-or-nothing mindset. We feel like we have to be perfect to make progress. How to break your all-or-nothing mindset: Practice progress over perfection. Learn the power of resetting immediately. Always do something. When someone can’t do it all, then they choose to do nothing. Instead of trying to do it all, pick one thing to focus on for the week to come. [14:00] Intermittent Fasting and Why Amanda Loves It For Weight Loss Breakfast is not actually the most important meal of the day. It took Amanda ten years of being a dietitian to realize that. There are actual physiological processes in the body that help us thrive in a fasted state. It’s effortless to be an intuitive eater. Time-restricted eating is not a diet. It’s not about what you eat. Instead, it’s all about when you eat. Amanda loves intermittent fasting because it’s flexible. You don’t have to fast every single day. Lastly, fasting is free, and it doesn’t cost you any money! [18:00] Fasting Before Bed: Tips To Stop Your Late Night Eating Habits Drink herbal tea in the evening. Non-caloric beverages are also okay to drink before bed. You can also adjust your eating window. If you prefer to eat more in the evening, then eat less in the morning. Start with a 12 hour fast, then ease your way into a 16 hour fast. [20:20] We Eat Way Too Much! Eat Until You’re Full and Lose Weight For some reason, people want to graze all day long. The reason you are eating all day long is that you’re not eating to fullness. You can eat 700 calories during one meal and still lose weight. People are scared of calories, fats, and carbs. At mealtimes, we are significantly undereating, which leads to more snacking. Sadly, people are eating every hour and a half. Finding six healthy things to eat throughout the day is impossible. Usually, the first three things you eat are healthy; then, the last three are not. Instead, we need to eat solid meals and stop snacking. [24:30] Metabolic Inflexibility Is A Key Risk Factor For Covid-19 During Covid, the conversation should be focused on metabolic health. If we had true metabolic health, Covid wouldn’t be such an issue. 88% of Americans are metabolically inflexible and unhealthy. We should get outside and get vitamin D. Also, Americans need quality protein, healthy fats, and to go outside and walk. Everyone's health has deteriorated significantly. We are now way more prone to any type of disease and virus. [28:00] Why You're Not Losing Weight From Your Registered Dietician You’re not losing weight because you are sitting all day long. Sitting is the new smoking! Taking a walk after a meal will result in lower blood sugar. That’s the power of activity. When we eat and lay around, our blood sugar response will be much greater. Another reason you aren’t losing weight is that you are focusing on calories instead of macros. Losing weight is all about blood sugar regulation. Carbs digest rapidly, so they leave you wanting more. [40:20] Should You Avoid Carbohydrates For The Rest of Your Life? The only right way to keto is to cycle. It’s not healthy to be in ketosis forever. If you’re fat-adapted, you will be able to curb your cravings. Plus, you’ll be able to eat carbs and still feel fine. People need to have an understanding of what a good carb level is for them. [44:20] Do You Need Electrolyte Supplementation On A Keto Diet? Electrolytes are your missing link. There’s a huge power of sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Without adequate hydration, you can't metabolize fat. Thirst and hunger are similar signals. [01:15] Complications From Insulin Resistance and The Standard American Diet It can take 15 to 20 years to develop insulin resistance. Parents don’t want to take food away from their kids like macaroni, pizza, and chicken nuggets. Kids will start metabolically flexible and can get away with eating anything. However, it won’t last forever. If you still want to buy chips, then Kristina will suggest buying chips with cleaner ingredients. Instead of buying Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, try a pint of Rebel ice cream. The most common contributing factors leading to insulin resistance are lifestyle issues like nutrition. If we ate real food, then we wouldn’t develop insulin resistance in the first place. Processed food is speeding our way to insulin resistance. [06:10] Are You A Sugar Burner? Here’s What You Need To Do Now There are three things we can do when we are trying to get well: Time Restriction: how often you’re eating and when you are eating. It’s critical to stop eating before bedtime. Caloric Restriction: if you’re going to eat garbage, then eat less of it. Dietary Restriction: take something out of your diet that is not healthy for you. It will be a vast improvement from the Standard American Diet. If you want results, try all three of these steps. 76% of the world population does not have the genetic adaptation for LCT. You should consider cutting out dairy; cow dairy is inflammatory for most humans. If you have skin issues, headaches, and extra flatulence, then dairy could be the problem. [11:50] The Importance of Testing For Glucose Values and Ketones Values If you are extremely insulin resistant, there is hope if you’re willing to put in the work. Plus, they provide your GKI. People should test every single day, especially in the beginning. That way, you can learn which foods are taking you out of ketosis. Plus, by testing, you can learn how many carbohydrates that you can tolerate. Some people can stay in ketosis at 50 total carbs or 75 total carbs. Everyone has their own carb tolerance. [18:50] What Is Nutrigenomics? It Might Be The Future of How You Eat The Human Genome Project was a project that spanned many years. Human DNA was mapped out to correlate to different nutrients and hormones. APOE4 is an old gene, and it conferred a lot of health benefits. One of the benefits was fertility in cold weather. Plus, APOE4 correlates to neuronal health in the brain and also to cholesterol production. Unfortunately, today’s diet doesn’t correlate to that old gene. Our diet causes a lot of inflammation. If you have APOE4, you shouldn’t drink at all because you are 23% more likely to develop Alzheimer's. [26:10] The Role That Epigenetics Plays With Our Genes and Lifestyle How you live is what impacts your epigenetics. We are in control of our health. How much sleep do you get each night? How are you moving your body? Genetics is the blueprint. Genes are the potential, and they can give us a roadmap on how to live our lives. Epigenetics is the optimal lifestyle that will help you lead a healthier and longer life. There's a gene that correlates to ketones: PPARalpha. If you have this gene, eating extra fat will be challenging. [30:40] The Health Numbers You Absolutely Need To Know Ask for your A1C. That way, you know if you are headed for diabetes. C-reactive protein is a cardiac risk marker. You want it to be under a 1. Also, test for homocysteine, RBC magnesium, and B12. Lastly, get a full thyroid panel. [33:25] How Changing Your Lifestyle Can Impact Your Mental Health Sugar takes us on a roller coaster ride emotionally. There is a strong food-mood connection. Cold therapy can be a huge benefit for improving mood. People don’t need antidepressants and antianxiety medicine if they have the proper tools. It takes 72 hours to get off sugar. After doing research, Nick found that cell phone radiation could contribute to cancer. Everyone is using more and more wireless technology. EMF radiation is one of the fastest-growing environmental exposures. You have multiple types of EMFs and frequencies; no one really understands it. We're being exposed to this agent at levels that are unprecedented. [08:45] How Much EMF Exposure Has Increased Since The 1950s EMF exposure has increased a quintillion times since the 1950s. A quintillion is 18 zeros after a one. Exposure intensity is tremendously higher than the background, ancestral levels. Scientists are wondering this question: what are the safe levels of EMFs that human beings should be exposed to? The reality is that we don’t know. We don’t have a control group that has not been exposed. Society is moving towards more connectivity, whereas science is moving towards more danger when it comes to EMFs. [14:00] Pandemic Screen Time: Are Blue Light Glasses Actually Helping? People argue that blue light glasses do something; they block certain frequencies of blue. Scientists found there is a connection between macular degeneration from certain lights. So, people started wearing blue light glasses. The danger has to do with the intensity of the screen and how artificial our screen is. If the screen is flickering, there could be a detrimental effect on your cognition. Screens are tied to eye health and circadian rhythm. Overall, it’s critical for the human body to read the outside environment. [17:15] Should You Be Worried About EMF Exposure? The more we understand chronic disease, the more we link it with chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is oxidative stress. EMFs can increase oxidative stress in the body. EMFs can cause an overflow of calcium in the cell, reduced mitochondrial energy production, reduced melatonin productions, and chronic inflammation. At the end of the day, it comes down to why we are so inflamed. Inflammation can come from food, addiction, mental stress, alcohol, pollution, and viruses. EMFs are part of these stressors. [29:00] Do Wireless Bluetooth Headphones Really Increase Health Risks? Any Bluetooth headphones in your ear are exposing yourself to EMF radiation. Bluetooth headphones are worse for you than the radiation from your cell phone. Some people are wearing these headphones 24/7. Even if the headphones are off, it’s still emitting radiation. You are exposing yourself to dangerous and useless risks. [34:40] Effect of Electromagnetic Field Exposure On Sleep Quality Being close to power lines exposes yourself to another type of field: the 60-hertz magnetic field. 100 feet from the powerlines could start being safe. Close powerlines are not good for your health and are terrible for your sleep. Magnetic fields from the outside environment can really disrupt the body's ability to form the embryo. In a magnetic field is overall stress that is always present in the air around you; it's like living in a big bubble of radiation. If radiation impacts your sleep 10%, imagine the long-term effects. [42:40] What Is EMF Testing and How To Do It Yourself There are meters you can buy to test your area for EMF radiation. Some meters on Amazon cost as low as $50. You want a meter that will test microwave radiation or radiofrequency radiation. It's very useful to have a meter like that to find sources that you don't expect might be emitting radiation.
