One night, as he stumbled out of a bar with only $3 in his bank account, Dan Saunders made a simple decision that would change his luck and his life forever. He stopped at an ATM on his way home to try to withdraw cash from his nearly-maxed-out credit card and discovered a glitch in the system. Somehow, the bank machine allowed him to withdraw a lot more money than the balance in his account. He was planning to report it to the bank, but when he tried to withdraw even more cash, he realized he had uncovered a loophole that would allow him to withdraw an endless amount of cash forever - as long as he stopped on top of things. Why spoil a good thing?  So instead of calling the bank to let them know about the glitch, he spent the next four months living a life of total luxury, buying suits, gambling in Vegas and taking lavish vacations. The story of the unsolved disappearance of eight-year-old Relisha Rudd is particularly tragic because, in her short life, she had already survived so much: Neglect, poverty, homelessness and a cycle of trauma within her family. Her mother, Shamika Young, grew up in foster care, struggled with behavioural issues and at one point even had to be placed in a mental facility.  Now, Relisha was living with her mom, stepdad Antonio, and little brothers in an overcapacity homeless shelter. It was here that her mother would entrust her to the care of a shelter worker, a janitor named Kahlil Tatum, who had taken a special interest in the little girl. After Shamika handed her precious daughter Relisha over to this practical stranger, 30 days would pass before anyone noticed she was missing. It was the staff at her school who felt something was amiss when they were given a note from her mother stating she was absent due to health issues. Authorities would learn that the note signed by a “Doctor Tatum,” was actually written up by the shelter the janitor, Kahlil Tatum. An investigation into her whereabouts would reveal two sightings of Relisha had hotels in the area, where she was seen walking down the hallway with Tatum. On the same day an Amber Alert was put out for Relisha, Tatum’s wife would be found shot dead. Shortly after that, Tatum himself would be discovered deceased from an apparent suicide - leaving everyone to ask the question, where was Relisha Rudd? 10 years have passed since Relisha vanished. Her family remains hopeful that she is alive while police have stated this is now a recovery mission. In any case, it is time she is found and brought home. Zohreh Sadeghi was a 33-year-old young woman living in Redmond, Washington. She was an immigrant from Iran, a successful software engineer and a podcaster, who shared her lived experiences talking about how to find a job in the tech industry as a newcomer. In the summer of 2022, she would have the chance to meet one of her listeners, another Iranian immigrant, 38-year-old Ramin Khodakaramrezaei, who seemed to be enamored with her. At first, Zohreh was flattered, but when he began harassing her, calling her from different numbers, and even showing up at her home with gifts, she became terrified and filed an order of protection against him.  Sadly, as we have seen time and again, orders of protection are pieces of paper that often do not protect victims against their stalkers. Just one week after the order was filed, Zohreh’s stalker would break into the home where she lived with her husband and shoot them in cold blood, before taking his own life. There is an important lesson to be learned here regarding the toxic parasocial relationships some people have with their favourite content creators and the lack of protection available to victims of stalking and harassment. Barbara Mackle would regret answering the door in the early morning hours of Dec. 17, 1968. On the other side was a masked man, 23-year-old Gary Stephen Krist, who had been researching all of the intricate details of Babara’s life for the last several months. He forced her into the back of a car he had waiting around the corner and drove her out to a remote forested destination where he instructed her to climb into a fibreglass box at the bottom of a pit that had previously been dug.  The box was expertly built to house a person for some time without them perishing and was fitted with an air pump, food, water laced with a sedative and a lamp. It was the summer of 2013 in Campbelltown, New Brunswick, Canada. Noah and Connor Barthe, who were 4 and 6 years old, had spent the day having a blast with family friends at a farm. That evening, they had a sleepover at their best friend's house, which was located just above an exotic pet store that his father owned.  Not all of the animals were kept downstairs in the store. Jean-Claude Savoie owned a 12-foot-long African rock python which was kept in a glass enclosure in the apartment. Somehow, during the night, the python escaped through an air duct. The 100lbs snake broke through the ceiling right above where the boys were sleeping in the living room. The following morning at around 6:30 am, Savoie would walk into the living room to a horrifying scene. The two little boys had been killed - crushed to death by the python.  Their family friends and the community were devastated over the loss of these two very loved children, while the python owner was charged with criminal negligence. He would be found not guilty, surprising some, and relieving others. There are no charges that could ever bring back these two incredible little boys, but there is a lesson here in responsible pet ownership and speaking up when you see something wrong. Nicola Furlong was a 21-year-old Dublin City University student who was studying University in Japan as part of an exchange program. In May of 2012, she enjoyed a night out at a Nicki Minaj concert with one of her girlfriends. When the concert was over, they planned to continue their night barhopping until the first train arrived in the morning to take them home.  While standing at the station, they encountered two American men and were happy to meet other foreigners who could speak English. They decided to head to a bar and share some drinks. The rest of the evening was a blur, as the last thing Nicola’s friend would remember was taking a shot of tequila before blacking out, coming in and out of consciousness. They were taken to a nearby hotel where the men separated the two women. A few hours later, Nicola Furlong was discovered strangled to death inside one of the rooms.  With Nicola’s friend not having much memory from the evening and the two American men denying any wrongdoing, it was lucky that there would be surveillance footage and recorded audio of some of the events that went down that night - and when you learn what was uncovered and what happened to the two American men, it will make you sick to your stomach.
