On the evening of September 14, 2008, Jennifer Spoerl went out for the evening, leaving her two children at their home in Summerville, South Carolina with her live-in boyfriend, Justin Hillerby. Jenn arrived home late and didn’t check on her 22-month-old son, Blaise, until after 10:00 the following morning, when she found Blaise dead in his crib with dried blood on his face. Days later, after telling multiple versions of his story, Justin Hillerby was arrested and charged with Blaise’s murder.In this episode, I’ll tell you the story of a beautiful, blond, blue-eyed boy who didn’t live to see his second birthday thanks to the drunken rage of his mother’s boyfriend. I’ll also tell you the story of a mother who reportedly continues to make terrible decisions in regard to her children’s safety even after losing one of them in such a predictable, preventable way. Last week, I told you the story of two-year-old Dante Mullinix of York, Pennsylvania, who died in the hospital on September 15, 2018. Dante’s death was ruled a homicide caused by traumatic brain injury with strangulation and chest compression, but Dante’s head and body were also covered in bruises, and he suffered from an active case of herpes 2.My guest on today’s episode is Dante’s maternal aunt, Sarah Mullinix, who helped her sister raise Dante for all but the last three months of his life and petitioned the court for emergency custody of her nephew when she found out Leah and Dante were homeless. Even after his death, Sarah continues fighting for Dante. Two weeks before his third birthday, two-year-old Dante Mullinix was rushed to the hospital, unresponsive. His mother’s boyfriend claimed Dante choked on animal crackers. Several days later, on September 15, 2018, Dante was pronounced dead. His death was ruled a homicide caused by traumatic brain injury with strangulation and chest compression. An autopsy revealed the toddler’s head was covered with bruises, and he also had bleeding on the brain as well as hemorrhaging inside his neck.Police arrested 40-year-old Tyree Bowie and charged him with Dante’s murder. He currently awaits trial, but Dante’s aunt, Sarah Mullinix, and many others believe he is innocent. Did authorities in York County, Pennsylvania arrest the wrong man? Over the past 2 weeks, I told you the story of 8-year-old Rica Rountree, who DCFS left in her father’s home despite clear evidence that she was being abused. After Rica died on January 26, 2019, investigators found disturbing cell phone videos of Rica’s abuse and arrested her father’s girlfriend, Cindy Baker. After Cindy was convicted, Rica’s father, Richard Rountree, was also arrested for his part in his daughter’s death. In this episode, you’ll hear my conversation with Rica’s mother, Ann Rountree, who is relentless in her mission to protect other children from suffering her daughter’s fate. Riddle Me That! True Crime is a weekly true crime podcast hosted by Jules Ph.D, who takes a deep dive into the facts of unsolved cases, disappearances, and mysteries. Today, I'm sharing a full-length episode of Riddle Me That! True Crime with you!Official show notes: "Noah Donohoe was a 14-year-old boy who lived in Belfast with his family. On Father’s Day June 21, 2020, amidst lockdown Noah had made plans to go to Cave Hill Park with friends to complete his Duke of Edinburg award (similar to Boy Scouts, but decidedly more complex). Noah put the location into google maps and set off, but something must have derailed him. Noah was caught on 22 CCTV cameras; this was nowhere near the 180 counted on the route that Noah took that the family would later count. There appeared to be gaps in footage and in time. The CCTV that was captured was disturbing, Noah was in various states of undress, shedding his clothing and belongings. Noah’s mother Fiona sounded the alarm later that day and the community rallied behind her; people came out in droves to search for Noah. Noah would later be found in a storm drain in a loyalist area, an area he was unfamiliar with and no business being in. Why was Noah there? And why did the PSNI make a preliminary conclusion of accident upon finding an unclothed 14-year-old boy in a storm drain? This was before a pathologist had looked at the body and determined manner of death, prior to the forensics being run, prior to evidence being collected and prior to individuals who may have had something to do with Noah’s death being questioned. The family has been let down by investigators and stonewalled, as a response the community filled the gap, standing up to the authorities and forming Noah’s army, a movement that is in direct response to the family feeling as though they need to push authorities to do what they are supposed to do…. investigate the death of a child thoroughly. There will be an upcoming coroner’s inquest, where hopefully all the details will come to light. In this episode I speak to Sunday World Journalist Trish Devlin about her experiences as a journalist in Northern Ireland, the abuse, trolling and misogyny she’s personally faced, as well as the history and delicate peace in Northern Ireland. On April 5, 2017, a concerned resident of an apartment building in Braham, Minnesota called 911 after hearing screaming from the apartment below. When police responded, they found 2-month-old Eli Arispe Hentges dead in his playpen. Eli’s mother, 24-year-old Shy Ann Hentges, was interviewed by investigators, but her story changed when Eli’s autopsy revealed his tiny skull had been fractured.This is the story of a baby born into less-than-optimal circumstances.
