We just returned from our second trip to Minnesota for the Care for Caregivers Retreat hosted by The More Than Project and Finding Coopers Voice. Join us for our very first Live Podcast in Minnesota. We had the pleasure of joining our friends at the Care for Caregivers Retreated hosted by Finding Cooper’s Voice and The More Than Project. There is no doubt that the isolation of this life leaves moms of kids with additional needs longing for mom friends they can relate to. We were honored to be able to record and celebrate the fantastic caregivers in the room in Minnesota. We answered questions from our listeners, played Friendly Feud, and thanked Kate Swenson for bringing us together. It was a magical weekend and something none of us will forget. Join us for a chat about the upcoming Care for the Caregiver Retreat this weekend. Laurie Hellmann of Welcome To My Life - Skyler's World and Adrian Wood of Tales of an Educated Debutante will be speakers at the event and we got a little taste of their advice and knowledge. We will be hosting a live podcast during the event and can't wait for a fun time with all the caregivers! Laurie Hellmann lives in Indiana with her husband Josh, her 17-year-old NT daughter Kendall and 19-year-old son Skyler - who has been diagnosed with severe, non-verbal autism and ulcerative colitis. Laurie authored the memoir Welcome to My Life: A Personal Parenting Journey Through Autism, hosts the podcast Living the Sky Life – Our Autism Journey and speaks on various topics related to autism and being a lifelong parent caregiver. The goal for all platforms is to empower families faced with an autism diagnosis as well as those who are open to learning more with insights, tools and resources to do so. Adrian Wood is a rural Eastern NC mother of four, one with extra special needs. Past preschool teacher, nanny, children’s ski instructor, early interventionist, college professor, early childhood researcher, wife and full time mama. In writing after a twenty year hiatus, I offer personal glimpses where satire meets truth, faith meets irony, despair meets joy and this educated debutante escapes the laundry and finds true meaning in graceful transparency. We break down sensory processing and how our kids take in the world. Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. Some people with Sensory Processing Disorder are oversensitive to things in their environment. 80% of children diagnosed with autism also have Sensory Processing Disorder. Our kids take in the world in their way, and often the world around them can feel overstimulating. We shift and monitor their intake of the sounds, textures, smells, and people around them to help them navigate the world outside our homes. Navigating the outside world can be hard for our kids in a world filled with complex sounds and energy. We chatted with our friend Deidre Lueneburg, a speech-language pathologist, about her life raising three boys. Her middle son was diagnosed with autism at age four. We loved this discussion about the balance of therapy with what is practical at home. Get information about different speech types and what we have experienced with our kids. Communication is fascinating in all senses of the word, and we have balanced speech with providing communication to our kids. We discuss speech devices, pecs, scripting, and what has worked for us in our homes. Deidre is a mom of three boys, a wife to her husband of 21 years, and has been a speech-language pathologist since 2009. Her middle son was diagnosed when he was almost 4 in 2016. Since then, she has been learning so much as a parent, including how to make the best of this "different" life we've been given. In the past few years, she has also decided to return to the schools as a jack of all trades, using her knowledge as both Mom and SLP to help even more kiddos, teachers, and families.
