S11: Life Hacks E3: DIY Therapy
We talk about the ways we bring therapy technics into our home with all the resources that are provided to us from outside sources. The items that we have in our home and how we incorporate those things into our daily life and our kid's daily life. With all of our different ages of kids, the tools and resources change with age but the effort never stops. We modify our focus as they get older and work to also allow them to have time to just be kids. Balance is always a work in progress for parents of autistic children, independence is all of our goals for our kids and a focus we spend a lot of time working for. Not only do we practice life skills but helping our kids find what works best for their minds and bodies. We have cameras, locks, furniture changes, and other safety precautions because we care so much about each one of our kids. While things dramatically shifted in the interior design space for most people during the pandemic we had already set up our homes to be a sanctuary for our kids and their needs. S11: Life Hacks E1: How to take a Momcation
Have you ever called up your friends and said let's go somewhere for the weekend? The Table for Five ladies took a take a trip to Minnesota for a special weekend. We talk about what it takes to prepare to leave our children for some much-needed time alone. How sometimes there can be some residual feelings from our kids upon our return and that mom life doesn't stop just because we are away. We share our experiences meeting each other for the first time in person and how amazing it truly was. How we hoped that everything would just fall into place as it does when we chat online and it did. It was a fun-filled, magical weekend. To all the other moms we were able to spend time with over the weekend, we are so grateful for the support and love that was given to us during our time away. To our friend, Kate Swenson thank you for hosting and making our friendship really come full circle by being able to meet face to face at your first Mother's Day event. Our recommendation is that every Mom should fly or drive to another city to meet up with some other Moms who understand your parenting journey. Also, eat all the carbs because you deserve it. It is ok to say I need this trip for me. This episode is sponsored by Sense-ational You use our code TABLEFORFIVE for free shipping Sense-ational You. Because fashion is for all. Interview with Chelsey Hautz, MScOT, BKin, practicing pediatric occupational therapist
You do not want to miss this episode! We talk with Chelsey Hautz, who practices as a pediatric occupational therapist in Vancouver, Canada. She has lived and worked in Canada, the UK, and Hong Kong. She believes wholeheartedly that we are built for connection and the meaning we cultivate within our own bodies, with others around us, and within the environments, we occupy from who we become and how we make sense of our lives. Her curiosities about the constantly changing field of neuroscience and the powerful connection between brain and body have led her to pursue a variety of post-graduate courses. She is committed to the learning and unlearning it takes to practice within a paradigm that values neurodiversity, inclusion, and autonomy centering on children and families throughout the therapeutic process. We were blown away by this interview with Chelsey, not only does she take the time to understand her own personal growth as a professional but reflects on the growth of the children she works with by tailoring her practice to each individual child. Chelsey was a huge part of Jenn and Kya's autism journey and made a lifelong impact on both of them. We learned so much and could talk to Chelsey for hours. Wait till you hear how she explains what occupational therapy is and why it is so important. Sense-ational You. Because fashion is for all. PSA to Providers
First and foremost we want to thank every person who has taken the time to come into our children's lives with an open heart and mind. There is no doubt that you will hear in this episode how much you have not only impacted our children's lives and ours as you sit across from us in a therapy program or school setting. What we wanted to do was just open a conversation about things that could help families like ours throughout this process. Providers often are doing the best they can in the area of practice they work in and we wanted to share some perspective from a parent's view. We would love for any of our listeners to share this episode with your therapist or teachers if you find anything helpful or you find yourself nodding your head along with what we are saying. Communication is the key and starting these conversations about all that we are juggling is so important. Often we cannot find the words to say all the things that would help as we sit in a quiet waiting room or as we are trying to take in all the suggestions from multiple people throughout the week. We would love to be your voice if you just can't find the right words.
