The Week in Trump: When Is a Trial Not a Trial, a Hoax Not a Hoax, and a Big Trade Deal Neither Big Nor a Trade Deal?
As the Senate impeachment trial looms, Republicans seem not to understand what a trial is. They don't want witnesses. They don't want evidence. They especially don't want witnesses or facts that might further implicate the president in crimes. But if they seek no evidence do they also then accept the House's view of the facts as the final truth? Is their stirring defense of the president that they don't care that what he does was illegal rather than proving he didn't do it? We discuss with Mieke Eoyang of the Third Way. Then we turn to Trump's apparent view that if the accusations are a hoax then a fake trade deal can sufficiently distract from it to make it all go away. In fact, GOP counter-programming to the impeachment this week has been two trade deals--one with China and the USMCA. Why did they pick trade? Are these deals significant? And what is the future of trade for the U.S. We discuss with Fred Hochberg, former Eximbank Chairman and author of a great new book entitled "Trade is Not a Four Letter Word." The Soleimani Killing Was the First Wag-the-Dog Episode of the Trump 2020 Campaign...Whose Dog Will Be Next?
The president has no foreign policy expertise, no advisors, no morals, no scruples and he is in deep political hot water at home. So naturally, he wags the dog with an attack on Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. He does it in spite of international law. He lies about it. He doesn't think through the consequences. And he survives politically. So, now you know that as this year of ever-increasing pressure on the president progresses, he's bound to try it again. What dog will he wag next? And which of the issues raised by last week's attack will have the most enduring consequences. We discuss with Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law School and Kori Schake the head of the Foreign Policy and Defense program at the American Enterprise Institute...and it's not a discussion to miss. Why the Impeachment Trial Might Be the High Point of Donald Trump's Year
If and when Nancy Pelosi decides to sends the articles of impeachment to the Senate, the odds of a fair trial are slim to none. (Aw, who are we kidding? They're zero.) Trump will be acquitted. He will have a celebratory press conference and declare he has been exonerated, an end to the hoaxy witch hunt. But will his legal troubles stop there? What about as more details of his crimes are revealed? More cover ups take place and are revealed? Other trials reveal more evidence against the president and his men. We discuss with former US prosecutor Harry Litman, Just Security Editorial Director Kate Brannen and Just Security co-editor Ryan Goodman why things might go from bad to worse for Trump and why it could all go on for years. Also discussed: The aftershocks of Kate Brannen's scoop revealing the unredacted contents of communications on the Ukraine scandal that incriminates the president and reveals deep fissures within the Trump Administration. And: Can the president just go around knocking off any foreign leader he wants? Join us. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio. Have We Just Bumbled into Another War in the Middle East?
In the days since President Donald Trump ordered the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, the presidents's spokespeople have taken to the airwaves to claim that we are safer with the Iranian who had the death of hundreds of Americans on his hands gone. But so far, things don't feel safer. The Iranian government--which has a global network of proxies at its disposal--promised revenge. It vowed to enrich uranium beyond limits set by the agreement struck during then Obama Administration. The Iraqi parliament voted to expel U.S. troops from that country and the U.S announced the beginning of its withdrawal. Oil prices moved upward. Russia, Iran, and ISIS stood poised to benefit from declining U.S. influence. To some, another Mideast war seemed inevitable. But is it? Will Iran prove to be the rational actor who calms then situation? Will Trump blink and actually seek the de-escalation his Secretary of State promised? Will divisions in the national security establishment have an impact? Kori Schake of AEI, Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law and Joe Cirincione of the Ploughshares Fund discuss on an urgent, can't miss episode of Deep State Radio. Rep. Eric Swalwell: Don't Assume McConnell Holds the Winning Hand on the Shape of the Senate Trial
During this special 20 minute conversation with one of the standout stars of the impeachment process, California Congressman Eric Swalwell, he parries the latest jibes from the White House against Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Majority in the House by noting that 70 percent of the American people want a fair trial in the Senate. For this reason, he argues, Americans should not jump to the conclusion that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will get his way and convene the kangaroo court he has promised he would deliver. Swalwell also discussed recent revelations about how Putin shaped Trump's Ukraine views and just what shape on-going investigations will have to take in 2020 to counter the on-going abuse of power by President Trump. The Republican Centipede: It's a Horror Movie, but for Whom?
In the wake of impeachment, all eyes turn to the Senate. Will delaying handing over the articles of impeachment buy the Democrats any leverage? Will buying time be enough with new bad news for Trump breaking daily--such as the report it was Putin who told him about Ukraine interference in 2016 or the magazine Christianity Today coming out for the president's removal from office? Or will the Senate sham trial come and go but these constant developments put the GOP in an ever weaker position. Many shoes are yet to drop. That's why we call it the Republican Centipede. (Well, at least that's one possible reason.) Join former US Attorney and MSNBC commentator Joyce White Vance and NYU Law and Just Security's Ryan Goodman for a do-not-miss episode on the week's biggest story.
