What God Expects From The Grace He Gives Us All: The Parable of the Talents In today’s Gospel, most are familiar with the story of the Talents. However the scripture is unsettling. In today’s world, many believe the Resurrection occurred two thousand years ago. We believe and know that Jesus loves us. Many, however, believe that Heaven is ours by right. Some believe, today, that it doesn’t manner how I live, as long as I am basically OK. As long as I do not commit a serious sin. They believe this because God loves me (us) so much … He will overlook everything. Then, we have today’s Gospel, which states the exact opposite! Note the image in the Gospel. The King is going away on a journey. This is similar to the Lord going away during the Ascension. And what did the Lord say to His Church and His disciples? I entrust everything to you! In the Gospel the King gathers his servants in preparing to leave and he trusts his wealth to them before he goes. The servants must be about service until the master returns. When the master does return, he calls his servants to give an accounting of their actions. Notice the master is very deliberate on giving to his servants. He doesn’t give them more than what they can handle. He doesn’t ask much in proportion to what is given. God gives each of us grace. He gives us talents, not for our own use exclusively, but in His service. Listen to the expectations of the master and Listen to this homily and use it as a meditation piece for our own Spiritual Journey.
