How Did This Feast Day of the Exaltation of the Most Holy Cross Come About? What Do We Really Celebrate? One of the factors that gives rise to the Feast of The Exaltation of the Most Holy Cross, . . . . . . is an event that happened 1400 years ago. At that time Persian armies moved across Europe and Asia conquering many cities including Jerusalem. It was sport to capture the Christians and kill them. The Persian king carries away from Jerusalem the remaining piece of the Cross residing in that city. The other pieces had previously been taken to Rome. The Persians took the Cross away as a sign of triumph and as a sign of their strength. Years later Jerusalem raised an army and fought the Persians, who realized they could not win without great loss. Jerusalem negotiated piece, and one of the conditions was the return of the Holy Cross. When the Cross was returned there was a triumphant procession in Jerusalem, through the streets to the same place on the hill where Jesus died. Something odd happened during this procession.
