Jesus’ Foretelling of Good Friday: Jesus Raises the Widow’s Son The Church established standards for Apostolic Service. St. Paul tells us of these characteristics in the first reading (not included within this audio). St. Paul tells us what a true calling really involves. Hear more within the Homily. In the Gospel we hear about the story of a young man who died. We hear about a funeral procession, accompanied by friends and the mother of the son. There are many who share in the affliction of the mother. St. Luke tells us the heart of Jesus is struck with compassion for the mother. The Lord is moved with compassion. The Homily touches upon something that is very beautiful within this scripture. Jesus is not only touched by the women’s sadness. In seeing her, Jesus sees something else too. We hear that the young man, whose life ended tragically early, was the mother’s only son. We also her that she was a widow. The comparison is striking. Jesus is a relatively young man in His early thirties. Likewise, Jesus is the only Son of His mother. And likewise, His mother is a widow. We again hear that Jesus is moved to compassion by a widow afflicted by the loss of her only son. Jesus knows there will be another widow deeply grieved by the loss of her only son.
