It was a very special Earth Day this year, for a multitude of reasons. Our incredible planet was given somewhat of a rest in pollution with the world shutting down due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Even more importantly we were able to get THE Juice Box down to the Barn to share their virtuosic talents and masterfully crafted songs. The group is led by drummer Matthew Elton Smith who we had on Ep.009 with Fresh Veggies Micro Brass (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htxn2YCSbQ4&t=2877s). Matt is one of SD's finest musicians and also hosts a really killer podcast every Tuesday at noon called The Drum Stream (https://www.thedrumstream.com/) He created Juice Box after first hearing the group Vulfpeck and falling in love with their sound. Amongst being a ridiculous monster drummer, Matt also went to school for the trombone and is always picking up new instruments including the Mbira. Joining him in this super group is Louie Valenzuela on guitar, whom also runs a live-stream called Electric Louie Land (https://www.electriclouieland.com/index.html) Louie is always putting on events and playing around town make sure you see what he's got cooking. On keys is the legendary Ed Kornhauser (https://edkornhauser.com/). Ed quite simply is one of the tastiest keyboardists and prominent pin collectors this side of the mississip. He puts a spell on us with his solos and witty charm. On bass tonight is the self proclaimed "5th Beatle" Harvey Magsino. Bass duty is filled by Harvey and SD's own Omar Lopez who is the MD for Maracuyá who we had on Ep.019 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53g0JDzsn3Q&t=1s) Juice Box played the SD fair every day in 2021 and is hoping to be back this year for more fun. They have two albums out that you can grab on their bandcamp (https://juiceboxsd.bandcamp.com/) The s/t first LP is available on purple vinyl and Vol.2 you can get digitally. Make sure you catch these guys any chance you get. We are so thankful that the pandemic gave us all some time off to get back to our roots and connect with our passion projects. Thank you again to Juice Box for taking the time to make this happen safely in a very uncertain time.
