Valerie Joi’s music emanates a joy rooted in freedom and authenticity. A gifted and multifaceted musician, Valerie Joi has worked as a pianist, vocalist, composer, vocal coach, arranger and producer. She also directed the UC Santa Cruz Gospel Choir for thirteen years, where she was named a Porter College Faculty Fellow by the university. A highlight of her musical career thus far has been singing background vocals for Quincy Jones at the 2016 Monterey Jazz Festival (and upcoming this year at the Hollywood Bowl in September). Her greatest joy is witnessing transformation and healing through song. Currently, Valerie Joi is also a PhD student in Transformative Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where she is focusing on the interconnection between music, spirituality and social activism.
