EP162 - Can You Have Sex in Your Sleep?

Welcome to episode 162 of the Sexology Podcast! Today it’s my pleasure to welcome Amir Mohebbi to the podcast. In this episode Amir speaks with me about Sexsomnia, the behavioral patterns around this issue and what treatment can look like.

Amir Mohebbi is a proud Iranian-American currently completing his psychiatry residency at St. Louis University. He trained under mentorship from world-renowned forensic psychiatrists, Drs. William J. Newman and Brian J. Holoyda, whom co=authored a review related to his interests in sleep medicine and forensics entitled “Sexsomnia as a Defense in Repeated Sex Crimes”.

Amir presented his work alongside an expert panel consisting of forensic psychiatrists at the American Psychiatric Association 175th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. In 2020, he will join a panel consisting of sleep medicine experts at the SLEEP 2020 conference hosted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society in Philadelphia, PA. He earned his medical degree from St. Louis University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of California, Irvine.

As a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, she attended the University of Cincinnati, where she earned both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Public Health degrees. She later earned a PhD in Health Behavior and Epidemiology from Indiana University-Bloomington.   Dr. Townes has over 15 years of experience providing sexuality education across a variety of academic and public health entities. Dr. Townes currently works in a postdoctoral research role in Atlanta, GA. Ashley’s research focuses on the sexual experiences of Black women, including partnered experiences, accessing health information, and utilizing sexual health services.   As a young investigator, she has been a part of at least 15 peer-reviewed publications, serves on the Editorial Board for the American Journal of Sexuality Education, contributes to the Live Alive Wellness Blog created by Pure Romance, and has been featured in a variety of media, including Mind Body Green, Woman’s Day, Cosmopolitan, and MTV News). She is the PI of the SAMHSA funded Neighborhood Healers Project, which seeks to advance mental health literacy and utilization among Black Lexingtonians.  She is also a co-I on projects funded by NIDA, HRSA, and NIMHD examining substance use outcomes, treatment, and sexual health disparities. Additionally, she leads the Big Sex Study, a mixed methods, community-based participatory action research project investigating Black sexual wellness.  She is the founding director of the Center for Healing Racial Trauma, and the host of the How to Love a Human Podcast.
