Series 2 Episode 4 - Kirsty Carlyle

Welcome to The Engineer a Career Podcast!

Next up it's Episode 4, and it's is time to welcome our first biomedical engineer on the podcast.

Josh is joined by Kirsty Carlyle a Manufacturing Engineer at Össur and PhD student in Prosthetics and Orthotics

Kirsty graduated with an MEng in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, where her passion for engineering met a drive to make a difference both in the lab and in society. Her current research explores decision-making in partial hand prosthetic prescription, combining technical insight with user-centred design.

In this episode, Kirsty shares her unique career journey spanning academia and industry. Kirsty opens up and shares her journey into engineering, her ongoing PhD, and how she's balancing both roles while championing inclusion in engineering.

Kirsty also reflects on founding FemEng in Malawi, and why outreach, mentorship, and widening access are crucial to shaping the future of engineering.

If you're interested in biomedical engineering, prosthetics, or passionate about making an impact, this episode is full of inspiration and insight.
