The Youth Governor: When the Kids Get to Rule the World

Our special guests are documentary writers, directors and brothers Jaron and Matthew Halmy. Their latest production, the documentary The Youth Governor launches on August 26th in theaters and on Amazon. If kids ran the government and ran for public office, what would that look like? The Youth Governor shows us. The Youth Governor is a program by the YMCA, run nationwide, in which kids emulate government bodies with literally parallel elected bodies and roles filled by kids. The film The Youth Governor documents the California youth government and its election of the 72nd Youth Governor. The Youth Governor is the story of the candidacy, campaign, and election of the 72nd California Youth Governor. The program itself takes place in California's Capitol, 4,000 teenagers run a fully functioning government complete with legislators, lobbyists, political party bosses, and elections. Over the course of four months, three candidates emerge from a field of 40. On the campaign trail, in their homes, and with their peers watching their every word, these young candidates put together the unique mix of ambition, confidence, shamelessness, and pure motivation it takes to win. These young candidates see themselves as the heroic leaders that are nowhere around them. They feel burdened to solve the problems that their adult leaders have trouble addressing. Their story is a window into the world of young people who revere American democracy. The film follows these candidates as they throw themselves into the gauntlet of the electoral process. Today, the Halmy brothers take us into their world to tell us about the kids, the program and the film, and how it is our future. With co-host Brody Levesque

Emmy-winning director, Jeffrey Schwarz with BOULEVARD! A HOLLYWOOD STORY

Emmy-winning director, Jeffrey Schwarz with BOULEVARD! A HOLLYWOOD STORY

Some times life is even more fascinating than fiction. Behind the mystique of "Sunset Boulvard" is a nuanced parallel story of a fading star, her unrequited love for a stunning younger man, and the gay love story it complicated. This story is not fiction, however, it was real. Dickson Hughes and Richard Stapley were two young songwriters and romantic partners in the 1950s. They found themselves caught in movie star Gloria Swanson’s web when she hired them to write a musical version of “Sunset Boulevard" long before the Andrew Lloyd Webber version was even imagined.  Life imitated art when Gloria fell in love with Richard, and  Dixon and Richard found themselves trapped in a strange real life version of the classic Wilder film. Jeffrey Schwartz has brought the true story to life in the documentary Boulevard! A Hollywood Story, now streaming on iTunes and Apple+.  He is here with us today to talk about this true life romantic triangle and telling the world a new version of Sunset Boulevard. Jeffrey is an Emmy Award-winning producer, director and editor. His previous documentaries include “The Fabulous Allan Carr,” which premiered at the 2017 Seattle International Film Festival, the 2015 SXSW premiere “Tab Hunter Confidential,” the Emmy Award-winning HBO Documentary Films’ “Vito,” “I Am Divine,” currently streaming on Netflix, “Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon,” currently streaming on Amazon Prime, and the 2007 AFI Fest Documentary Audience Award winner “Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story.” With co-host Brody Levesque

The Secrets of Communists in the Closets with Famed Activist Bettina Aptheker!

The Secrets of Communists in the Closets with Famed Activist Bettina Aptheker!

Today we talk to famed author, activist and Distinguished Professor Emerita, Bettina Aptheker! Bettina's new book is Communists In Closets, Queering the History 1930s-1990s.  The book explores the history of gay, lesbian, and non-heterosexual people in the Communist Party in the United States. The Communist Party banned lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people from membership beginning in 1938 when it cast them off as "degenerates." It persisted in this policy until 1991. Bettina's book tells the stories of those who were forced to live in this very segmented "closet". Bettina was a high profile activist in the 1960s and 70s, and an acclaimed author and educator. After completing her master's degree, Bettina taught African-American and Women's Studies at San José State University. In the early 1980s, she completed a doctorate in the History of Consciousness program at the University of California Santa Cruz .Since 1980, she has taught in the Feminist Studies department there.
