The Youth Governor: When the Kids Get to Rule the World

Concord Originals, the narrative content creation division of the world’s leading independent music company and licensor of stage productions, Concord, partnered with Outfest to launch a one-of-a-kind short film financing and intellectual property licensing initiative to support up-and-coming LGBTQIA+ filmmakers of color. One of the featured films from this colaboration is a short film called Avivar, premiering at Outfest Los Angeles 2023.  Today we talk to the producer , writer, director and star of Avivar. Outfest began as a queer film festival and has become a major arts, media and entertainment organization. This year's festival runs July 13 to July 23. Avivar means to ignite, revive, rekindle, The film centers on Roberto, played by Jonathan De La Torre, who also wrote the story the film was based on. Roberto is dying and reflects on the machismo and homophobic trauma he inflicted on his family, and the dysfunction that created. Today wa talk to Jonathan, as well as director Miles Lopez, and producer Charles Hopkins. Our friend, and author, Brandon Wolf is with us today!  We will be talking about his new book A Place for Us. On one June night several years ago, life changed for Brandon. He crouched in a bathroom while a gunman opened fire at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub, killing his best friends, Drew Leinonen & Juan Guerrero, and 47 others. Touching on the horrific night at Pulse Nightclub, his memoir tells of his transformative journey from young outsider to galvanizing activist. Marshaling the compassion and strength of a community, Brandon explores how to get through the darkest times with healing, hope, and resistance. “With our backs against the wall,” he writes, “we find a way out together.” Brandon is a nationally-recognized gun safety and LGBTQ civil rights advocate and dynamic public speaker. He currently serves as the Press Secretary for Equality Florida, the state’s LGBTQ civil rights organization. Rather than be swallowed by the anger and fear of tragedy, Brandon has set out to honor the victims’ legacies with action. Besides telling his story to inspire justice, awareness and change, Brandon co-founded The Dru Project, a nonprofit organization that works to empower youth and provide future leaders in the LGBTQ community funding for higher education.   With co-host Brody Levesque

Premiering tomorrow at the Chinese Theaters in Hollywood, the film UnFix tells the story of Ari, who, at the young age of 11, is subjected to Conversion Therapy after a brief encounter with another boy. Fast forward to Ari's life at 35, where he leads a seemingly content existence as a happily heterosexual individual, convinced that he has been "fixed." However, the outbreak of a pandemic sends his world into upheaval, reigniting dormant questions about his authentic self and casting doubt on his previous identification as gay. We talk to writer/director Graham Streeter and his husband, executive producer Alex Lebosq. Graham Streeter is best known for his award winning feature films I May Regret (2019), Imperfect Sky (2016), Blind Malice (2013). academically acclaimed documentary Boys in Peril (2013) and Cages (2006) featuring Zelda Rubinstein and Oscar Nominee Mako Iwamatsu. Alex comes from a background as a TV commercial producer and business affairs manager. He has executive produced the films  Blind Malice (2013), Imperfect Sky (2016), and I May Regret (2019). Iranian-born actress Shila Ommi stars in the new Pixar Film ELEMENTAL as Cinder Lumen, the mother of one of the lead characters. Cinder ia the resident matchmaker of the town, utilizing her natural gift that allows her to smell true love in a Fire person’s smoke, whether they know it or not. She boasts numerous matches throughout her tenure—she’s proud of her track record—but this brusque, no-nonsense and traditional mom has yet to find a match for her daughter. Shila also co-stars in Tehran, the espionage thriller on Apple+ TV.. Our guest today, the  Rev. Dr. Steve Pieters was raised in Andover, Massachusetts, where his father chaired the Mathematics Department at Phillips Academy.  In 1976, he joined Good Shepherd Parish Metropolitan Community Church in Chicago, where he decided to pursue a calling to the professional ministry. In 1982, Steve resigned his position in Hartford and moved to Los Angeles, where he began to experience a series of illnesses that were diagnosed as AIDS-Related Complex. In April, 1984, he was diagnosed with AIDS/Kaposi's Sarcoma and stage four lymphoma, and he was told by one health professional that he would not live to see 1985. Not only did he live to see 1985, but during that year he became "patient number 1" on the first anti-viral drug trial, taking suramin for a total of 39 weeks. While on suramin, both cancers went into complete remission. Due to toxic side effects, the drug was discontinued for use against AIDS. However, Rev. Pieters continues to enjoy a complete remission of his cancers. Since his diagnosis, Rev. Pieters has served on the Boards of Directors of AIDS Project Los Angeles, the AIDS Interfaith Council of Southern California, the AIDS National Interfaith Network (USA), and the first Los Angeles City/County AIDS Task Force, and was Field Director for the AIDS Ministry of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches from 1987 to 1997. Pieters was one of twelve invited guests at a Prayer Breakfast at the White House with U.S. President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and National AIDS Policy Coordinator Kristine Gebbie prior to World AIDS Day 1993. The President talked about Rev. Pieters in his World AIDS Day speech on December 1, 1993. He was famously interviewed by Tammy Faye Bakker on her TV show, and that interview was recreated in the film The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
