The Best Way to Convey Safety to the Brain

At one point, I was doing everything “right.”

I had no job, no responsibilities, no deadlines. I’d moved back into my childhood home – meals taken care of, bills off my plate, no pressure to perform. I was surrounded by comfort, familiarity, and support. On paper, it was the most stress-free environment I’d ever had.

And yet… I was getting worse. Not just mentally – physically.

Panic attacks that came out of nowhere. Chest tightness. Brain fog. Insomnia. Intrusive thoughts that convinced me something had to be medically wrong. I was taking Klonopin just to take the edge off, and still I was spiraling.

Every test came back fine. Every doctor said there was nothing to worry about. But I was far from fine.

That’s when I started to realize: this wasn’t about my environment. It wasn’t about stress or circumstances. My body didn’t feel safe, no matter how safe the world around me was.

And here’s the thing nobody tells you – until your brain believes you're safe, none of the tools matter.
