BREAKING: Nick Reiner Was Under Court-Ordered Conservatorship Before Parents' Murder—Here's Why It Ended
Major new developments in the Nick Reiner case. The New York Times has confirmed that Rob and Michele Reiner's son was placed under an LPS mental health conservatorship in 2020—California's most extreme intervention for severely mentally ill adults. A judge found him "gravely disabled." Licensed fiduciary Steven Baer was appointed to make treatment decisions on his behalf. Nick could be forced to take medication and placed in a locked psychiatric facility against his will.The conservatorship lasted one year. It ended in 2021. It was never renewed.On True Crime Today, we explain exactly what an LPS conservatorship allows, why families cannot initiate these proceedings on their own, and the legal provision that may have made renewal impossible: under California law, if someone is providing for a mentally ill person's basic needs, that person may not qualify as "gravely disabled."The Reiners were housing Nick. Monique & Spencer Tepe Shot Dead: Surgeon Michael McKee Charged — Malpractice Evasion, Fake Addresses & Alleged 8-Year Obsession
Breaking down the Tepe murder case. Vascular surgeon Michael McKee, 39, is charged with two counts of premeditated aggravated murder in the shooting deaths of his ex-wife Monique Tepe and her husband Spencer Tepe in Columbus, Ohio on December 30th, 2025. Their two young children — ages one and four — were found unharmed in the home.McKee and Monique divorced in 2017 after a seven-month marriage. Family members describe the relationship as emotionally abusive, with death threats and lasting psychological damage. Monique's brother-in-law Rob Misleh told reporters she was "terrified" of McKee for years and "would talk quite often about how much he messed with her mental health."In the months before the murders, McKee was actively evading medical malpractice lawsuits in Nevada. Attorney Dan Laird documented nine failed attempts to serve him — fake addresses, a fax machine phone number, and colleagues who said he'd "just disappeared." His Nevada license had expired in June 2025. Meanwhile, Monique had remarried, had two children, and just celebrated her fifth anniversary with Spencer.Police tracked McKee through neighborhood surveillance and linked a firearm from his Chicago residence to shell casings at the scene.
