E40 - All Things Interviewing for Guests and Hosts with Guest CO HOST - Tamzin Hall

Episode 40 - All Things Interviewing for Guests and Hosts with Guest CO HOST - Tamzin Hall

In this episode of the How To Podcast Series, host Dave welcomes co-host Tamzin Hall from the south coast of the UK for an engaging dive into mastering podcast interviews as both guests and hosts. Broadcasting from Canada near Niagara Falls, they kick off with light-hearted chit-chat about appreciating local wonders—like soaking in the beauty of everyday landmarks such as Big Ben or the iconic falls—before tackling why podcasting journeys sometimes stall despite consistent effort.

Tamzin, drawing from her extensive background in interviewing, job searches, and psychology, stresses authenticity as the cornerstone: be uniquely yourself, stay true to your values, and ensure guests align with your podcast's purpose and audience. They discuss vetting guests through pre-call chemistry checks to avoid misfits, much like rejecting mismatched clients, and how to politely decline by framing it as "This might not serve my listeners best," encouraging invitees to research your show first. For new hosts nervous about interviews, start with trusted network contacts for relaxed, conversational vibes rather than rigid Q&A scripts—outlines help, but true listening sparks natural follow-ups and genuine connections that captivate audiences.

Mindset emerges as pivotal: pressure amplifies nerves in podcasts (less high-stakes than job interviews where livelihoods hang in balance), so clear mental space with 15-20 minutes pre-show for walks, meditation, or grounding breaths—feet on the floor to refocus amid distractions. Schedule buffers between sessions to reduce overwhelm, fostering presence that elevates hosts, guests, and listeners alike.

Key Takeaway: Authenticity and mindset preparation turn interviews into magical conversations—align guests to your audience, listen deeply, and enter relaxed to serve brilliantly.
