Filmmaker Jeffrey Schwartz Returns to Our Show with "Commitment to Life" !

Telling the story of the AIDS epidemic from the AIDS Project Los Angeles perspective, filmmaker Jeffrey Schwartz joins us again on RATED LGBT RADIO. We spoke to Jeffrey a few months ago about his gay love story film, "Boulevard". Stories of the AIDS crisis have been widely told with New York City or San Francisco as the backdrop. Jeffrey's new film Commitment to Life focuses on the emergence of AIDS Project LA,, its founders, and how it awakened Hollywood to challenge the inertia of the public in its response to AIDS. AIDS Project Los Angeles stepped into the center of the AIDS storm through a committed group of activists who helped care for the sick and dying, while at the same time lobbied those in Hollywood to contribute to the fight. APLA brought together A-list stars like Elizabeth Taylor, who used her celebrity to advocate for people with AIDS and inspired the Hollywood community to do the same. The film covers and features Nancy Cole, one of the founders of AIDS Project Los Angeles, one of the first women in LA to go public about having AIDS, Phill Wilson,an activist, Prop 64 which would have placed people with HIV in internment camps, Brenda Frieberg, who when both of her sons were diagnosed with AIDS, traveled to Washington to lobby for access to drugs that could save their lives and Jewel Thais-Williams, owner of Catch One disco, who helped start the Minority AIDS Project . Is Facebook a Hell Hole for Transpeople ? Plus Hot Playwright Daniel MacIvor!

Is Facebook a Hell Hole for Transpeople ? Plus Hot Playwright Daniel MacIvor!

We have two segments today!  Part one... we talk to Brennan Suen, the LGBTQ program director at Media Matters, about his article that shows Facebook to be a haven for right-wing anti-trans propaganda.  He has been a vibrant part of Media Matters since July 2015. He has a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, and he formerly interned at the Human Rights Campaign and SKDKnickerbocker. In part two of our show, we talk to playwight Daniel MacIvor about the newest productions of his plays The Soldier Dreams and Never Swim Alone.  These productions mark Open Fist Theatre Company returning to live, in-person performances at Atwater Village Theatre in Los Angeles.  The Soldier Dreams is a darkly funny and moving play --As David lies in a virus-induced coma, his lover, Richard, plays host to David’s family members, each of whom feel they had the most special connection. In the slyly witty and unexpectedly suspenseful Never Swim Alone, two men, Frank and Bill are locked in a ruthless competition of one-upmanship. Daniel’s plays have been seen across Canada and abroad. He has twice won the Dora Mavor Moore Award, is a Chalmers Award laureate, and in 2006 won the Governor General’s Award for his collection of five plays, I Still Love You, which includes The Soldier Dreams. He was a recipient of the Elinore & Lou Siminovitch Prize in Theatre, Canada’s largest annual theater award. Open Fist Theatre Company is a collective, self-producing artistic enterprise with all facets of its operation run by its artist members.  With co-host Brody Levesque

The Queer Filmmaker Striving to Give LGBTQ People Breadth of Humanity in Movies

The Queer Filmmaker Striving to Give LGBTQ People Breadth of Humanity in Movies

"Limited representation fuels internalized homophobia" asserts producer, writer, actor James Patrick Nelson.  "How do queer people learn to cherish the remarkable nuances of our identities if we rarely see nuanced, authentic portraits of ourselves on screen?" As an award winning film maker, James has set a creative target for himself and others in the industry regarding LGBTQ characters: they need to be "richly complex, multi-faceted human beings, with endlessly diverse and distinct experiences, and we deserve to be seen, for all that we are." Today we will be discussing this objective and queer representation in film up until now.  Plus, we will talk about James's new project  For Years to Come, now in production.   With co-host Brody Levesque.

Hot Comedy Scene Star Ian Lockwood is in the House with His NEW EP!

Brooklyn underground comedy scene staple Ian Lockwood is our guest!  We will be talking about his brand new EP Not Like Other Girls ... which features leading singles ‘Not Like Other Girls’ , ‘No Homo’, and ‘Your Dad’ , each with accompanying videos. Ian is known for creating comedy pop earworms that are equal parts hilarious and catchy, and his hybrid approach to comedy music has brought him recognition as both a comedian and a musician. His debut, the Nasty EP was called a “tantalizing display of talent” (Comedy Cake) and “sheer curatorial dedication” (Brooklyn Reader). The Not Like Other Girls EP promises to build on this foundation - "an infectious and uproarious record that scratches pop and comedy itches at the same time." With co-host Brody Levesque

Michael Kearns, the First Authentic "Out" Actor and Icon, is in Our House Today!

Michael Kearns, the First Authentic "Out" Actor and Icon, is in Our House Today!

LA Weekly has described the lifelong work of Michael Kearns as "collisions of sex and death, of eroticism and grief.”  Globally recognized as Hollywood’s first openly gay actor, Kearns became an artist-activist during the AIDS crisis, whose unparalleled work gave voice to those impacted by HIV/AIDS.  He is our guest today!  We will be discussing his latest inspiration, the world premiere of The Ache For Home, a docudrama illuminating homeless voices in West Hollywood (to be presented online on Sunday October 17). The production features citizens-turned-writers who share inspirational stories from their time on the streets, ranging from narratives of soaring self-acceptance to confessions of truth-telling defeats. The show’s title is a reference to a quote by Maya Angelou, “The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.”  Evolving from a career primarily as a theatre actor, who appeared in television and film, Michael established himself as an award-winning, internationally-acclaimed artist embracing the roles of actor, director, playwright, dramaturge, acting teacher, writing teacher, author, producer, and solo performer.    With co-host Brody Levesque
