Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty: Legal Expert Kelly Hyman Breaks Down Death Penalty Stakes | Crime House 24/7

Welcome to Crime House 24/7. In this special extended discussion, Vanessa Richardson takes a deeper look at the Nick Reiner case following his not guilty plea in the stabbing deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

Prosecutors allege that 32-year-old Nick Reiner killed his parents inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025, and have charged him with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances — making the case potentially death penalty eligible. Vanessa is joined by attorney and legal analyst Kelly Hyman to break down what prosecutors must prove in a first-degree murder case with special circumstances, how California’s death penalty moratorium affects charging decisions, and what role mental health history could play in potential defenses such as insanity or competency challenges. They also discuss jury selection in high-profile cases, plea deal possibilities, and the legal milestones ahead — from preliminary hearings to a potential trial.
