Literacy as a Lifeline: Empowering Communities Through Reading and Education

Literacy is more than the ability to read—it’s the foundation for opportunity, wellness, and empowerment. Your not alone with this issue. Many of Americans, adults and children are struggling with literacy comprehension and understanding and in this Ignite Spark talk, Josie Voorhies, Director of the READ Program, will explore how literacy serves as a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, improving mental health, and building resilient communities. With an abundance of experience in community-based education, Josie brings firsthand insight into how something as simple as access to books can change lives. Not just for highschoolers but adults as well.

Learn how literacy programs not only help individuals find jobs and support their families, but also nurture mental well-being through learning, connection, and creative expression. These programs are critical in communities where access to educational resources is limited, offering not just instruction, but hope and a sense of belonging.
