Qualifying for Georgia’s 2026 election cycle is underway, with several major candidates filing paperwork this week. Democratic U.S. Sen. John Ossoff officially qualified for reelection, while Republican U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter also entered the Senate race. Ossoff used the moment to criticize President Donald Trump’s military actions in Iran, calling the upcoming midterms a crucial test of checks and balances. In the governor’s race, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and former state Sen. Jason Estevez qualified on the Democratic ticket, while Attorney General Chris Carr filed to run as a Republican. Candidates have until Friday to qualify.

And Georgia lawmakers are pressing federal immigration officials to release Rodney Taylor, a Gwinnett County barber detained for more than a year at Stewart Detention Center despite serious medical concerns. Taylor, who was brought to the United States from Liberia as a child and has never left the country, lost both legs due to medical complications. Lawmakers say conditions at the facility have worsened his health and are demanding federal officials act.
