#201 - The Soho Strangler - Part Five 'Dutch Leah: A Forgotten Woman' (Soho, UK)

This is Part Five of Ten of The Soho Strangler.

May 1936. Three weeks after and two street south of the murder of Marie Cotton, and just two streets east of French Fifi, ‘Dutch Leah’ a third sex-worker would be found strangled in her Soho flat, on the second floor of 66 Old Compton Street. Again, there were no obvious signs of break-in, robbery or sexual assault. Again, the only entry point was a locked street door off a busy street. And again, the killer left no fingerprints, no clues to his identity and witnesses to the murder. It’s as if this maniac had attacked and vanished into thin air.

With two women slaughtered in similar circumstances just streets apart, again, the police had a prime suspect, a man known to the victim who had a method and a motive. But with two murders still unsolved and with no suspects, had they caught a killer, or another scapegoat for their incompetence? With a panic rumbling across Soho, as women wondered how safe they were in their own beds, as much as the police refused to believe it, their last option was one too terrifying to consider…

…that a serial-killer stalked these very streets, who the press would dub - The Soho Strangler.

  • Date: Friday 8th / Saturday 9th May 1936 between 12:30am and 2:30pm
  • Location: 2nd Floor, 66 Old Compton Street, Soho, W1
  • Victim: 1 (Constance May Hind/Smith, alias 'Dutch Leah')
  • This is Britain's least known and long forgotten serial killer

#278 - In the Ripper's Shadow (Soho, London, UK)

Across October and early November 1888, when 'Jack the Ripper' slayed several women in the East End of London, a smaller and largely forgotten sexual sadist was attacking women in Soho in the West End. Masked using a series of baffling distractions, his crimes were made possible owing to the fevered frenzy in the midst of a mini media mania committed in the Ripper's shadow. But who was he, was it a hoax, or did he even exist? For those fascinated by Jack the Ripper, here's an interesting side story about a crazed sadist who committed a shocking crime spree in West London, just three miles from Whitechapel, and possibly used Jack the Ripper's crimes to cover his own.Date: Friday 5th of October 1888 to Sunday 4th of November 1888.Location: several across Soho/Fitzrovia/Bloomsbury.Victims: 7 (Eliza Smyth, ‘Swiss Annie’, Jayne Jones, Emma Jewson, Alice or Anna Dedmun, ‘Minnie’ Jones and Eliza Shad)Culprits: ?Method of death: strangulation and mutilationBlog here - https://www.murdermiletours.com/blog/murder-mile-uk-true-crime-podcast-278-in-the-rippers-shadowMurder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile UK True Crime Podcast with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. #275 - Stolen Womanhood. On Sunday 5th of November 1978, at a little after 5:30pm, two women stood at a bus stop on Sydney Place in Kensington, SW7, waiting for the rush hour bus. #272 - Red MistOn Sunday 31st July 1949, just before midnight, Michael Martin unleashed a violent attack on a defenceless 53-year-old prostitute known locally as ‘Mona’.
