⛵ The Voyage That Discovered the Deep Ocean

⛵ The Voyage That Discovered the Deep Ocean

For most of human history, the deep ocean was a mystery. Many scientists believed that beyond a certain depth, the sea was a dark and lifeless desert.

In 1872, the expedition aboard HMS Challenger set out to test that belief. Over four years, the crew crossed the world’s oceans, lowering miles of rope and scientific instruments into depths no one had ever measured before.

In this episode of Saltwater Stories, we explore the voyage that changed everything.

The crew mapped hidden underwater mountain ranges, discovered the deepest place on Earth, and pulled strange creatures from the darkness that no human had ever seen. By the time the expedition returned home, thousands of new species had been documented and the foundation of modern oceanography had been born.

This is the story of the expedition that first revealed the hidden world beneath the waves.
