My Earliest Memory Was Violence” Childhood Trauma, Domestic Abuse & Building a Legacy Through The Fynix Project

My Earliest Memory Was Violence” Childhood Trauma, Domestic Abuse & Building a Legacy Through The Fynix Project

In this deeply moving episode of Becoming Lucy, Lucy and Hana sit down with Darryl to explore the lasting impact of childhood trauma, domestic violence, and what it truly means to survive.

Darryl’s earliest memories are shaped by violence at home. He shares what it was like growing up in fear, living in a women’s refuge, and experiencing the kidnapping of his siblings before his teenage years.

At 11, he was groomed by a trusted adult. The silence and survival mode that followed shaped his nervous system, his identity, and his mental health for years.

As an adult, he experienced relationship abuse, compounding earlier trauma and reinforcing patterns of hypervigilance and PTSD. After losing his younger brother, grief intensified everything.

At one point, Darryl found himself sitting on the edge of a bridge — a moment that forced change.

This episode explores:

• Childhood domestic violence and psychological abuse

• The kidnapping of siblings

• Male survivors of grooming

• Adult relationship abuse

• PTSD, survival responses and trauma-informed recovery

• Grief after sibling loss

• Women’s refuge and rebuilding safety

• Suicidal crisis and intervention

• Lived-experience-led mental health support

Today, Darryl is the founder of The Fynix Project, creating accessible workshops and safe spaces for people carrying trauma. His mission is clear: to provide the tools he didn’t have, help people now, and push for stronger policy around child protection and survivor-focused mental health care.

As a father — with a daughter and another baby on the way — his drive is about impact, accountability and real change.

This conversation is about trauma, mental health advocacy, policy reform, lived experience, and turning survival into support.

If you or someone you know has experienced childhood trauma, grooming, domestic abuse, or mental health struggles — this episode offers hope, practical tools, and proof that cycles can be broken.
