045 - The Fisherman and his Friend

Written in Classical Chinese, these tales blur the lines between the ordinary and the extraordinary, drawing on a rich tradition of oral storytelling. Pu, believed to have completed most of these stories around 1679, offers readers a captivating glimpse into a realm populated by vixen spirits, ghosts, scholars, court officials, Taoist exorcists, and fantastical beasts. With a satirical twist, the moral compass of these tales often turns upside down, showcasing ghosts and spirits as bold and trustworthy, while humans appear weak and easily swayed. Through these narratives, Pu reflects his own disillusionment with society, creating a vibrant tapestry of the strange and the surreal.
