Listen, not just to respond, but to understand.

Listen, not just to respond, but to understand.

This is the Golden Rule of Communication.
Most of us do not listen with the intent to understand; we listen with the intent to reply. While the other person is speaking, our brain is already busy:
Formulating a counter-argument.
Thinking of a similar story about ourselves ("Oh, that happened to me too!").
Judging whether we agree or disagree.
This is not listening; this is just waiting for your turn to speak.
The Shift to Empathic Listening: To listen to understand means to silence your internal monologue. It requires you to step out of your own autobiography and step into the other person's reality.
Validation: It makes the speaker feel seen and valued. When people feel understood, their defenses drop, and true connection begins.
Accuracy: You cannot solve a problem if you don't actually know what the problem is. "Responding" reacts to the symptoms; "Understanding" reveals the root cause.
As Stephen Covey famously wrote in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: "Seek first to understand, then to be understood."
The "Looping" Technique: The best way to ensure you are doing this is to reflect back what you heard before you offer your opinion.
Instead of: "Well, you should do X."
Try: "So, what you are saying is that you feel overwhelmed because..."
The Challenge: In your next conversation today (with a partner, child, or colleague), try this: Do not offer any advice or opinion until the other person says, "Yes, exactly!" This confirms you have truly understood their position.
