Small Town, Big Fear: Placerville’s Summer of Horror– Ep.123

n this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we travel to Placerville, California, during the summer of 1984—a season that forever changed a small foothill community. What began as the disappearance of a teenage foster child quickly escalated into fear, panic, and the realization that a predator was stalking vulnerable young girls in the shadows of the Eldorado National Forest.

Episode Summary

When 14-year-old Denise Galston accepted a ride from a man she knew around town, no one realized it would mark the beginning of a terrifying killing spree. Within weeks, Denise, her twin sister Debbie, and 18-year-old Lynda Burrill would all be found murdered in remote areas of the Eldorado National Forest.

At the center of the investigation was Michael Anthony Cox—a local forestry worker with a troubling history of degrading and targeting vulnerable girls, many of whom lived in foster care or unstable situations.

As investigators pieced together the crimes, one witness held the key to the case: 17-year-old Joanna Napoletano, who witnessed Denise’s murder but remained silent for months out of fear. Her eventual testimony helped lead authorities to the truth, though years later the case would become even more complicated through recanted statements and legal challenges.

This episode examines not only the crimes themselves, but the fear, trauma, and systemic vulnerabilities that allowed a predator to target girls he believed no one would protect.
