Aphasia Awareness May Not Be Enough. Here's How to Start Rebuilding | #200

You used to talk to anyone. The cashier. The neighbor. The guy at Home Depot. Now you sit in the car with your aphasia and let your wife go instead.

Want to get back to being "the guy?" Take your first action: https://aphasiastrengthscompass.com

In this episode I talk about Jerry. Four years post-stroke. His world had gotten tiny. He didn't see his own responsibility in getting back to himself. He felt that traditional rehabilitation and speech therapy didn't fully preparing him for real-world challenges.

Three things came out of that conversation.

- His world shrank because shame was driving it, not aphasia recovery.

- The people around him pulled back because they were following his lead.

- And his voice had literally gotten softer over four years because he had decided he was less worth hearing.

Once he saw those three things, everything changed. I walk you through what we did next. You can start this week.

Your first action this Aphasia Action Month is the Aphasia Strengths Compass. It shows you exactly where you stand in your communication right now and what to build on first.
