What Barry Morphew Called Himself While Out on a Murder Bond

Barry Morphew posted a three-million-dollar bond and walked out of an Alamosa County jail in September 2025. He was fitted with an ankle monitor and ordered to remain in Colorado while awaiting trial for the murder of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. The trial was set for October 13, 2026. It was supposed to last six weeks. Both sides agreed to the date.

Then the defense asked for more time. Attorney Alexis Bair-Elson told the court the team couldn’t adequately question witnesses given the volume of discovery. The judge granted a continuance over the prosecution’s objection and over the protests of Suzanne’s siblings, who had already arranged travel to Alamosa for the trial.

The delay extends a case that has now stretched six years without a single witness testifying before a jury. Charges were first filed in 2021 and dropped in 2022 after the DA committed repeated discovery violations. Suzanne’s remains were found in September 2023 near Moffat, Colorado, with a wildlife tranquilizer compound in her bones. A grand jury re-indicted Barry in June 2025. He was arrested in Arizona, where he had been living under a name that was not his own.

Tony Brueski digs into who requested the delay, why the prosecution opposed it, what Barry was doing while the clock ran, and what thirty-one pretrial motions filed in a single day tell you about the defense’s strategy.

Barry Morphew has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
