What Did Rex Heuermann Reveal About His Kill Cycle In The Documentary?

Have you ever sat with a serial killer before? Rex Heuermann asked that question to a therapist inside Suffolk County Correctional — and the way he asked it told her everything. It wasn't vulnerability. It was a man performing his own legend. What came after was far more revealing. This look back examines what the documentary sessions produced — details no courtroom would have.

Heuermann described a four-day cycle he refined over years: preparation, the killing and what he called the aftermath, cleanup, and a buffer day. He said he timed his disposals with a stopwatch — from over two minutes on his first to under forty seconds on his last. He was competing with himself. Perfecting a system. And when he looks at crime scene photos in his cell, he says he can't connect the person in them to himself. The two worlds don't merge. FBI profiler John Douglas sat with the family therapist and gave his assessment — comparing Heuermann to BTK and noting that Heuermann had something Dennis Rader envied: the space, the room, the uninterrupted ability to carry out his compulsions.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott breaks down what the documentary revealed about the psychological architecture — the violent ideation that reportedly began in adolescence, the escalation into action, the compartmentalization that allowed him to function as a husband and father while killing. She examines whether his confession-session behavior represents genuine disclosure or another form of the control that defined the crimes themselves. Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven murders and admitted to an eighth. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.
