Why your identity is an illusion?

Why your identity is an illusion?

The Ship of Theseus: Who Are You, Really?

"If every single part of your car or computer that broke down over time was replaced one by one with new ones, would the vehicle in your hands years later still be the original one you first bought?

What if a cunning mechanic secretly collected those old parts removed over the years and reassembled them to make an exact copy of your car; which one would be 'the real' one: the car you are driving, composed of entirely new parts, or the car the mechanic built from the old parts?

In this video, we explore the famous 'Ship of Theseus' problem, famously analyzed by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, which tests our intuitions about the identity of objects over time. However, we aren't limiting the issue to wooden planks or automobiles; we are embarking on a much more unsettling journey toward our own existence and 'personal identity.'

How can you claim to be the 'same person' when the physical and psychological similarities between your two-year-old self and your ninety-year-old self are almost non-existent?

Is what makes you 'you' merely being a continuous biological organism made of flesh and bone, or is it your mental 'software' consisting of your memories, beliefs, and experiences?

If your brain were transplanted into another body in the future, would you possess a new body, or would that body possess a new brain? When a teleportation device—like in Star Trek—destroys your body and creates an exact copy of you on the Moon, do 'you' continue to live, or have you technically died?

As the Scottish philosopher David Hume claimed, is there actually no concrete 'self' at all? Are we merely a bundle of ever-changing thoughts and experiences?

If you are ready for this philosophical storm that will make you question your own identity and the sense of being 'me' from the very beginning, welcome to the video! In your opinion, is it your body or your memories that make you 'you'? Share your thoughts in the comments!
