After Virtue: The Collapse of Modern Moral Language

After Virtue: The Moral Catastrophe and the Quest for Meaning

Good, evil, right, or wrong... Why do our contemporary moral debates reach a stalemate, never arriving at a rational conclusion?

In one of contemporary philosophy’s most profound masterpieces, After Virtue, Alasdair MacIntyre puts forward a chilling claim: We have suffered a great moral catastrophe, yet we aren't even aware of it! Our current moral language consists merely of fragmented concepts and meaningless wreckage from a once-coherent tradition that has lost its context.

According to MacIntyre, the Enlightenment attempt (by Kant, Hume, and Kierkegaard) to ground morality in pure reason or passion has collapsed. Consequently, we are trapped in the age of 'Emotivism'—where all moral judgments are seen as arbitrary expressions of personal preference and emotion. In a modern world that rejects the holistic purpose (telos) and narrative structure of human life, the stage is no longer occupied by virtuous heroes, but by 'Bureaucratic Managers', 'Wealthy Aesthetes', and 'Therapists' who treat people as mere tools.

So, where is the way out? To escape this deep crisis of modern morality, we face an inevitable philosophical crossroads: Nietzsche or Aristotle?

We must either accept the radical nihilism and 'Will to Power' of Nietzsche, who argued that objective morality is merely a mask for imposing one's own values; or, we must return to the Aristotelian tradition of virtue, which views human life as a teleological and meaningful quest oriented toward a common good.

In this video, we examine how modern humanity lost its moral compass, the truth behind modern philosophical fictions like 'utility' and 'natural rights', and how we can reconstruct the forgotten concept of virtue in our lives. Prepare for a groundbreaking philosophical journey into the meaning of life and the origins of our actions. Enjoy the show!
