Kind Words for Patients with a Terminal Diagnosis

Kind Words for Patients with a Terminal Diagnosis

In this episode, Dr. Bohn discusses communicating in a compassionate manner with individuals who have received a terminal diagnosis. We have all been in a situation where we have learned upsetting news about a person's health. Being able to speak with them can be difficult, but not impossible. These are some suggestions to consider when speaking with someone about their serious health issue. We want to face the challenge: to be open to hear and address their news seriously, and face the person with empathetic statements. After the patient breaks their bad news, they may not want to provide much more information, we need to allow the person to share what they want. Being respectful of their privacy while expressing our openness to hear more, when they are ready to talk about it, is very reassuring and comforting. This information can provide some suggestions of various ways to communicate caring and support. You can consider what feels natural to you then add that to your dialogue. There are also some comments that might not be well received, evaluate if these could be rephrased or should be avoided.
