On a silent catwalk above a car assembly line — where battery packs now sit in place of engines — Haru and Sakura unpack the strangest numbers in Japanese food business: 36 ramen shops went bankrupt in six months, an all-time record, while the ramen market races toward one trillion yen.

The famous "1,000-yen wall" — the belief that no bowl should cost more than about six dollars — has finally cracked. Ippudo sells an eight-dollar bowl inside station buildings where it looks cheap by comparison. Ichiran charges ten and earns millions more from souvenir noodles. Hachiban raises prices and launches a three-dollar bowl on the same day. Meanwhile Yoshinoya buys a Seattle ramen company, a Nagoya brand opens its 13th shop in Vietnam, a Paris counter serves miso aged in a 242-year-old brewery's wooden barrels — and Toyota, the carmaker, sells high-protein soy ramen at a one-day stall in Fukuoka.
