Wow ! St Paul's Bold Move at Antioch

Welcome back, truth-seekers, to 2 Minutes with the Lord and our Mission Series: Paul in 12 Cities. I am back again with yet another vital city. I am your host on the show, Fr. Veigas Dominic SVD, and in this season, we’re journeying across the ancient world with St. Paul, exploring how the Gospel took root in the great cities of his mission.

Last time, we began in Damascus, where Saul, the persecutor, became Paul, the missionary. Today, we arrive in Antioch — the city that became the first great mission centre of the early Church, and the place where believers were first called “Christians.”

Where is Antioch?

Antioch, located in modern-day Turkey, was the third-largest city of the Roman Empire, after Rome and Alexandria. A bustling metropolis of half a million people, it was famous for its wealth, culture, and cosmopolitan mix of Greeks, Romans, Jews, and traders from the East.

It was here that something extraordinary happened. After the persecution that followed Stephen’s martyrdom, believers scattered and carried the message of Jesus wherever they went. Some came to Antioch and began preaching not only to Jews but also to Greeks. For the first time, the Gospel crossed cultural barriers.

Barnabas was sent from Jerusalem to encourage this new community, and seeing God’s grace at work, he fetched Paul from Tarsus. Together, they taught in Antioch for a whole year. Acts 11:26 records: “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

This city became Paul’s missionary base, the launching pad for his journeys across the Mediterranean world. What Jerusalem was to Jewish Christianity, Antioch became to the Church’s global mission.

“So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.” – Acts 11:26

The community in Antioch was not a hidden group or a Jewish sect. Their identity was not tied to a synagogue, a nationality, or a philosophy, but to Christ Himself. Up until this point, followers of Jesus were known by many names: disciples, believers, those of the Way. But in Antioch, for the first time, outsiders saw them and gave them a new identity — Christians.

That one word carried weight. It meant that Christ was at the centre of everything they did: their worship, their teaching, their charity, their community life. They didn’t just belong to a philosophy; they belonged to a Person. To be called a Christian was to be recognised as someone who lived so much like Jesus that the world could not miss the connection.

The second part of this verse is equally essential: Paul and Barnabas spent a whole year teaching and preaching the word of God. This was not a quick mission trip or a passing visit. They invested time, energy, and presence in forming a community that could grow deep in faith. The Gospel didn’t spread by accident — it was nurtured, explained, lived out in daily life, until Antioch became strong enough to send christians across the world.
