Star Wars: Visions The Ninth Jedi Is Something Special (First 3 Episodes Review)

We've watched the first three episodes of Star Wars: Visions PresentsThe Ninth Jedi, and we have a lot to say. The eight-episode limited series dropped all at once on Disney+ and Hulu on August 5, but we're taking it slow and giving you our honest mid-watch impressions before we've seen how it all ends because three episodes in, this already feels like something genuinely special.

For the uninitiated: The Ninth Jedi is produced by Production I.G. the legendary studio behind Ghost in the Shell and Haikyu!! directed by Shunsuke Tada and supervised by Kenji Kamiyama, the same creative mind behind the original 2021 Visions short that many fans consider the greatest plot twist in Star Wars history. The series is set roughly 1,000 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, in a galaxy where the Jedi Order has long crumbled into obscurity. Lah Kara a teenage girl with a natural gift for the Force and Margrave Juro are on a galaxy-spanning mission to rebuild the Jedi, rescue Kara's father Lah Zhima (the last known sabersmith in the galaxy, now captured by Jedi Hunters), and fight back against the growing threat of Nawaam and the last Sith, Gennoh. Three episodes in, Production I.G.'s animation is breathtaking, the lightsaber colour mechanic is unlike anything Star Wars has done before, and the moral grey areas this show is already introducing a strain of Jedi philosophy described as "giving into nothingness" having us asking questions the franchise has never really asked before. This is not your typical Star Wars. And that is absolutely a good thing.
