Voynich Manuscript, coded manuscript, unknown language, mystery book

The Voynich Manuscript, cataloged as Beinecke MS 408 at Yale University, is a real medieval codex filled with unidentified writing and unusual illustrations. Radiocarbon testing dates the parchment to the early fifteenth century, while ink and pigment analysis has found materials compatible with medieval scribal practice. The manuscript includes botanical drawings, astronomical or astrological diagrams, nude human figures in pools and tubes, pharmaceutical-looking vessels, dense text blocks, and the famous Rosettes foldout. Its documented trail passes through seventeenth-century Central European scholars, the world of Rudolf II, Georg Baresch, Johannes Marcus Marci, Athanasius Kircher, and finally the rare-book dealer Wilfrid Voynich, who acquired it in 1912. This episode follows the evidence: what the manuscript physically is, how it moved through known custody, what science has ruled out, why Roger Bacon can no longer be credited as its author, and why repeated claims of a final decipherment have failed to win scholarly agreement. The central dispute remains unresolved: whether the manuscript preserves concealed text, an unknown or obscured language, a technical notation, a medical or astrological compilation, a constructed system, an elaborate pseudo-text, or something else entirely.
