SET FREE | John 8:31–59 | From the Archive

What does it mean to be truly free?

Our culture often defines freedom as the ability to live however we want, make our own choices, and answer to no one. But in John 8, Jesus gives us a radically different picture of freedom.

Jesus says, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

In this message from John 8:31–59, we explore a challenging conversation between Jesus and those who claimed to believe in him. Jesus exposes the uncomfortable reality that it is possible to think we are free while actually being enslaved—to sin, pride, self-deception, and false ideas about God.

But Jesus doesn't simply expose our slavery. He offers us freedom.

True freedom comes through knowing the truth, remaining in Jesus' Word, and ultimately knowing Jesus himself. He is not simply another religious teacher pointing us toward truth—he is the eternal Son of God who existed before Abraham and has come to set captives free.

This passage confronts us with an important question: Who is really ruling your life?

Freedom isn't found in doing whatever we want. True freedom is found in Jesus Christ.
