The Man No Prison Could Hold: Jack Sheppard

The Man No Prison Could Hold: Jack Sheppard

Welcome to Sleepytime History™ — true stories from the pages of history for a full night's rest.

Tonight we drift back three hundred years into the candlelit streets of 18th century London, to follow the remarkable true story of Jack Sheppard — a nimble-fingered burglar and ingenious escape artist whom no shackles or cell could hold. Orphaned at a young age and lifted from the poorhouse by a kindly draper, Jack was set up in an honest trade as apprentice to a master carpenter. Yet he would fall into a life of crime, robbing even the man who had once been his rescuer. And when the authorities seized him and shut him behind a heavy door, they soon discovered that clever hands taught to fit a lock could just as easily pick one. Time and again he slipped away, until these vanishing acts became the talk of the city — and a common criminal was remade into the most notorious prison-breaker and celebrated folk hero in English history. But such a reputation draws more than admirers. Soon a man named Jonathan Wild, the self-styled Thief-Taker General who hunted the city's wanted men for profit, fixed his gaze upon Jack — and drew the strings slowly tight, until at last the great criminal court of the Old Bailey would decide his fate.
