The Voices in the Pews | After Midnight

Working alone in an old church during the week was supposed to be peaceful. Then she began hearing footsteps in the empty sanctuary.

After that came the humming. The creak of wooden pews. Quiet voices behind closed doors. Even what sounded like someone delivering a sermon when she knew she was the only person in the building.

At first, she blamed the acoustics and the quirks of a century-old structure. Then a longtime member told her something she never forgot. Maybe the church wasn’t haunted. Maybe it remembered.

And one night, long after everyone had gone home, she finally heard what generations of people before her had quietly described.
