1372: Milk | Skeptical Sunday

Oat, almond, soy, dairy—the milk aisle is a culture war in your coffee. But what's best? Jessica Wynn brings all the truth to the yard on Skeptical Sunday!

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by writer and researcher Jessica Wynn!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

  • On nutrition, dairy still wins — about eight grams of high-quality protein per cup versus one to two for most oat milks, plus it's the cheapest protein you can pour. Switching to plant milk to feel healthier can quietly cost you the very nutrition you assumed tagged along.
  • The viral "gallons per almond" stat is engineered outrage — framed per nut, never per glass, and never beside dairy. Full life-cycle studies show dairy actually uses more total water and carries the biggest footprint of all. When a scary stat trends as an industry loses share, ask who funded it.
  • Branding, not merit, decides what's in your cup — soy and pea rival dairy on protein, and hemp and pea are the cleanest options environmentally, yet all three barely sell. Pea milk's real handicap is its name. The market rewards the familiar and coffee-friendly, not the nutritionally best.
  • The war over the word "milk" is mostly theater — the DAIRY PRIDE Act has stalled since 2017 because the FDA's own focus groups found nobody confuses oat milk with cow's milk. It was never about deception. It's about protecting the billions in market share dairy lost fair and square.
  • There's no single "right" milk, only the one that fits your priority. Want nutrition? Soy or pea. Environment? Oat, pea, or hemp. Best latte? Oat or macadamia. Digest dairy fine? Enjoy it. For kids under five, ask a pediatrician, not a barista. Consistency beats purity.
