Fall Asleep to The Book of Giants Mystery

Somewhere in the last few centuries before the Common Era, a scribe composed a text in Aramaic about giants who dreamed troubled dreams. They were the offspring of heavenly beings who had crossed a boundary they should not have crossed, and they knew — in the way that characters in ancient literature sometimes know — that judgment was approaching. They argued among themselves. They sent a messenger across a vast distance to find the one figure who could interpret their dreams. The text was called the Book of Giants, and fragments of it were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, copied alongside the Book of Enoch and the most important scriptures in the collection.

But the Qumran caves were not the end of the journey. Three centuries later, a Mesopotamian prophet named Mani adopted the Book of Giants into his own religious canon and carried it eastward. Translated into Middle Persian, then Sogdian, then Uyghur, the text traveled the full length of the Silk Road — through mountain passes, across deserts, between oasis cities — until fragments of it turned up in cave libraries in Turfan, in western China, five thousand kilometers from the desert where it was first composed. Scholars working with scraps from opposite ends of the ancient world discovered they were reading the same story, told in different languages, separated by a thousand years and every landscape in between.

Tonight we trace the longest journey any ancient text has ever taken. Two caves — one above the Dead Sea, one in the Tarim Basin — hold fragments of the same book, written in scripts that share nothing and languages that never touched, and yet telling the same story about the same dreams. The distance between them is too vast to cross tonight. Let it be vast. Let it hold you in the space between, the way the Silk Road held the text between one translation and the next. Rest in the middle of it. Sleep.
