What Happens After We Die?

What Happens After We Die?

What happens when a heart stops, circulation fails, and a person later returns with memories from the edge of death? Modern resuscitation medicine has created a rare scientific opportunity: survivors of cardiac arrest can be interviewed, while researchers examine medical records, brain activity, oxygen levels, and—in a small number of studies—hidden audiovisual targets designed to test claims of out-of-body perception.

This episode follows the work of cardiac-arrest researchers including Sam Parnia, Pim van Lommel, Bruce Greyson, Jimo Borjigin, and their collaborators. It examines prospective studies in Dutch hospitals, the AWARE and AWARE II resuscitation projects, organized EEG activity during prolonged CPR, and gamma activity observed in some dying brains. It also considers brain-based explanations involving hypoxia, carbon dioxide, REM-sleep intrusion, dissociation, ketamine, neural network disruption, and memory reconstruction.

The evidence establishes that some survivors report vivid and consequential experiences around cardiac arrest. It also establishes that a resuscitated cardiac-arrest patient is not the same as a person who has undergone irreversible brain death. No hidden-target experiment has produced repeatable visual evidence of perception independent of the brain, and no survivor has returned from rigorously established permanent brain death to describe a postmortem experience.

The question remains open at two levels: when do near-death experiences occur, and can science ever test what lies beyond a boundary that nobody can cross and return from?

This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Episodes are editorially reviewed before publication.

Is There a God? What Does the Evidence Actually Tell Us?

The universe has been expanding for roughly 13.8 billion years from an extremely hot, dense early state. Cosmic expansion, the cosmic microwave background, light-element abundances, and the growth of ...

The Edge of the Observable Universe: What Lies Beyond What We Can Ever See?

The observable universe is about ninety-two to ninety-three billion light-years across, yet the universe itself is approximately thirteen point eight billion years old. That apparent contradiction is ...
