Ep. 15 - The Hillbilly Heist

In this episode of THE HEIST, we dive into the unbelievable true story of the 1997 Loomis Fargo Robbery, one of the largest cash heists in American history—and the bizarre chain of events that earned it the infamous nickname "The Hillbilly Heist."
David Ghantt was a Loomis Fargo vault supervisor who walked away with $17,044,200 in stolen cash. He fled to Mexico, while his accomplices suddenly went from ordinary lives to luxury homes, expensive cars, jewelry, and outrageous spending sprees.
But then things got really strange.
There's the velvet Elvis, the massive amount of cash, the suspicious bank transactions, the FBI investigation, the getaway to Mexico, and an astonishing plot to have Ghantt killed.
And then there's the would-be hitman who was supposed to eliminate him……but somehow ended up befriending his intended victim.

We'll take you from the planning and execution of the robbery through the reckless spending, FBI investigation, arrests, convictions, and the incredible true events that eventually inspired the 2016 comedy Masterminds, starring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis. The movie was outrageous. The real story was even crazier.
