The Murder of Laurence Winstanley: The Body in the Dam

On 2nd October 1988, 23-year-old Laurence Winstanley left work and headed to a local pub in Shaw, Greater Manchester.

A seemingly ordinary day would end with Laurence being brutally murdered, his body later discovered in Baitings Reservoir in West Yorkshire.

But almost four decades later, the circumstances surrounding his death remain shrouded in unanswered questions.

Why did Laurence receive a mysterious telephone call at The Windsor pub? Why did a journey that should have taken just five minutes take around an hour? And why was his car later found abandoned at a scrapyard — only to be destroyed before police could properly examine it?

There was a Crimewatch appeal. There were witnesses who came forward. There was even a £25,000 reward offered by Laurence’s mother in the hope that someone would finally break their silence.

But despite all of this, nobody has ever been brought to justice for Laurence’s murder.

And perhaps most hauntingly, police believed Laurence may have had a part of his life that he had never revealed to those closest to him.

So, 38 years later, what really happened to Laurence Winstanley?

And does someone, somewhere, still know the truth?
