A visit to Poland 2026

Our latest adventure took us to Poland, a country neither of us had visited before.

We decided to split our time between two very different cities, Kraków and Warsaw, travelling between them by train.

We began in Kraków, a beautiful historic city that was very easy to explore on foot. We wandered through Planty Park, visited St Florian's Gate and the impressive Market Square, with its colourful buildings, cafés and the famous St Mary's Basilica.

We also explored the Jewish Quarter, visiting places such as the Corpus Christi Basilica and the area associated with Schindler's List. It was fascinating, but also a reminder of the tragic history of Kraków's Jewish community.

One of the most memorable, and certainly most sobering, days of the trip was our visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau.

Warsaw immediately felt very different from Kraków. It is a much larger, more modern city, but its history is impossible to escape.

We explored the Old Town, walked through Saxon Gardens and visited the Palace of Culture and Science, where we went up to the observation deck for some fantastic views across the city.

We also visited the Royal Castle Gardens, the Multimedia Fountain Park and the Copernicus Science Centre.

One of the things that impressed us most about Warsaw was its Old Town. Knowing that much of the city was destroyed during the Second World War makes the beautifully reconstructed buildings and streets even more remarkable.
