Fall Asleep to The Civilizations That Vanished and Left Only Their Buildings

Fall Asleep to The Civilizations That Vanished and Left Only Their Buildings

Around 1100 CE, a city in the floodplain of the Mississippi River had a population larger than contemporary London. Its centerpiece was a flat-topped earthen pyramid covering more ground than the Great Pyramid at Giza, built entirely by hand, basket by basket, over three hundred years. The city had a grand plaza, a solar calendar, a palisade wall, and over a hundred mounds. By 1400, it was empty. The people dispersed into the river valleys and the prairies. The mounds stayed. They are still there — in the suburbs of St. Louis, bisected by highways, surrounded by parking lots, the largest earthworks in the Americas, from a city that no European ever saw occupied.

Tonight we sit with six civilizations that invested generations of labor into permanent stone and earth, and then left. Cahokia and its mounds in the Mississippi floodplain. The Minoans, who built palace complexes on Crete with indoor plumbing and a writing system — Linear A — that has never been deciphered, and whose civilization collapsed within a century and a half of the catastrophic eruption of Thera. Angkor, the largest pre-industrial city ever built, whose thousand-square-kilometer urban landscape was reclaimed by the Cambodian forest until LIDAR revealed its full extent in 2012. Petra, carved directly into the rose-red sandstone cliffs of southern Jordan by Nabataean traders who controlled the incense routes, gradually emptied after the Romans shifted the trade, and "rediscovered" by a Swiss explorer in 1812 — though the Bedouin who lived in it had never lost it. Derinkuyu, an eighteen-story underground city carved into the volcanic bedrock of Cappadocia, capable of sheltering 20,000 people, discovered in 1963 when a resident broke through his basement wall and found a room that led to a passage that led to a city beneath his feet. And Doggerland — the vast lowland that once connected Britain to continental Europe, inhabited for thousands of years by Mesolithic communities, drowned slowly by rising seas after the last ice age, now thirty meters beneath the North Sea, still giving up its flint tools and mammoth bones in fishing trawler nets.

The buildings outlasted the builders. The mounds are still standing. The facades are still carved. The underground rooms are still sealed. The drowned landscape is still holding its shape beneath the water. Everything is where it was left — patiently, in the dark, without urgency, without need. Let them hold you. The stone is patient. The water is patient. Rest with it.
