Fall Asleep to The Bunkers That Were Built to Survive the End of Everything

Fall Asleep to The Bunkers That Were Built to Survive the End of Everything

Beneath a luxury hotel in the mountains of West Virginia, the United States government built a 10,500-square-meter bunker designed to house every member of Congress after a nuclear attack. It contained dormitories for 535 legislators, a decontamination chamber, a medical clinic, a cafeteria with sixty days of supplies, and a broadcast studio where surviving members of Congress would address whatever remained of the nation. Government employees posed as television repair technicians to maintain the facility in secret for thirty years. It was never activated. A reporter revealed its existence in 1992. The dormitory beds are still made. The broadcast microphone is still on the desk. The camera still points at an empty chair.

Tonight we sit with five facilities built by governments that genuinely believed nuclear war was possible and made architectural preparations to survive it. The Greenbrier bunker beneath a resort hotel, maintained for three decades and never used. Burlington, a 35-acre underground city beneath the English countryside with its own road network, hospital, BBC studio, and underground lake — designed to run Britain from beneath a Wiltshire hillside for three months. The Cheyenne Mountain Complex, fifteen freestanding buildings mounted on 1,319 steel springs inside a granite mountain in Colorado, designed to ride the shock of a nearby nuclear detonation. Metro-2, the unconfirmed parallel subway system reportedly running beneath Moscow at depths of 50 to 200 meters, connecting the Kremlin to military command facilities through tunnels that appear on no public map. And the Sonnenberg Bunker in Lucerne, Switzerland — a highway tunnel with 350-ton blast doors built to shelter 20,000 civilians, part of a national policy that constructed enough shelter space for every person in the country, decommissioned in 2006 when the government concluded it could not be sealed in time.

The Cold War ended. The missiles stayed in their silos. The bunkers went dark. The beds stayed made. The microphones went cold. The blast doors stayed open. The rooms that were built for the worst day in human history became storage closets and tourist attractions and wine cellars — and the fact that they were never needed is the best possible outcome. Let the rooms be empty. Let the corridor be dark. Let the beds stay made. The world did not end. The rooms are proof of that. Rest.
