J&J: Ortho Evra + Hip Implants

Hey there Poison Friends! We are ending out run down of Johnson & Johnson here with an episode on their birth control patch from the early 2000s and their metal-on-metal hip replacement implant (Pinnacle). We've obviously covered a lot of lies and cover ups concerning J&J products and it just seems to get worse as they get bolder.

Ortho Evra was supposed to be this new way to prevent pregnancy or deliver estrogen to the body and promised to be similar to a low dose pill. This idea of low dose estrogen is a big deal, because it was discovered early on in the birth control game that higher amounts of estrogen resulted in much higher risks for blood clots as in DVTs, leading to disabling and sometimes deadly consequences such as heart attacks, strokes, and pulmonary embolisms. So why were these clotting incidents occurring in more women on the patch?

We also need to discuss the safety mandates involved in complex medical devices such as those placed internally like implants for hips. J&J created a metal-on-metal implant for the hip with the intention of having a narrower gap between parts because of previous problems with such devices. When this design wasn't holding up, however, they simply lied about the specifications when submitting for approval. Eventually, their lies caught up with them.
